Target Information
Adipose tissue plays a major role in regulating physiological and pathological processes such as metabolism and immunity by producing and secreting bioactive molecules known as adipokines.
The adiponectin/ACRP30 family and its paralogs, the C1q/tumor necrosis factor-alpha-related proteins (CTRPs 1–7), are highly conserved adipokines.
Unlike adiponectin, which is expressed exclusively by differentiated adipocytes, the CTRPs are expressed in a wide variety of tissues and act mainly on liver and muscle to control glucose and lipid metabolism.
Structural analysis of adiponectin indicates an evolutionary link between TNF and C1q-containing proteins, suggesting a common ancestral innate immunity gene.
In obese (ob/ob) mice, RT-PCR analysis shows elevated mCTRP1 transcript levels in adipose tissue compared to normal mice.
