Target Information
Chromosome 6 comprises approximately 6% of the human genome, containing around 1,200 genes within 170 million base pairs. Deletion of part of the q arm of chromosome 6 is associated with early onset intestinal cancer, suggesting a cancer susceptibility locus. Porphyria cutanea tarda is linked to chromosome 6 through the HFE gene, mutations of which predispose to porphyria. The PARK2 gene, associated with Parkinson’s disease, and genes encoding major histocompatibility complex proteins, crucial for immune function and rheumatic disease predisposition, are also located on chromosome 6. Additionally, Stickler syndrome, 21-hydroxylase deficiency, and maple syrup urine disease are associated with genes on chromosome 6. A bipolar disorder susceptibility locus has been identified on the q arm. The C6orf225 gene product has been provisionally designated C6orf225 pending further characterization.
