GPC3는 헤파란 황산을 포함하는 세포 표면 프로테오글리칸으로, 주로 중배엽 조직과 기관에서 성장 억제 및 조절에 관여할 수 있습니다. 또한 IGF2 수용체와의 상호작용을 조절하여 세포 성장과 분열 조절, 종양 발생에 영향을 줄 수 있습니다.
GPC3 유전자의 결손 돌연변이는 Simpson-Golabi-Behmel 증후군(SGBS, Simpson dysmorphia syndrome, SDYS)의 원인이며, 이는 내장 및 골격 이상을 동반한 출생 전후의 과도한 성장(거대증)으로 특징지어집니다.
