Target Information
West Nile Virus (WNV) is a member of the Flaviviridae family, which includes St. Louis encephalitis virus, yellow fever virus, and Dengue virus. WNV was first isolated in 1937 in the West Nile region of Uganda and is now prevalent in Africa, Asia, and Europe. It has spread across the United States with cases in every continental state.
The virus consists of a dense core of capsid protein surrounding the RNA genome, enclosed by a membrane envelope containing envelope and matrix proteins essential for viral entry into host cells. The core protein is associated with WNV-induced inflammation via apoptosis through the caspase-9 pathway, as shown in mouse brain and skeletal muscle studies.
