Target Information

14-3-3 sigma (stratifin, SFN, epithelial cell marker protein 1) is a member of a highly conserved family of 14-3-3 proteins present in all eukaryotic organisms. Seven mammalian isoforms (epsilon, beta, zeta, gamma, theta, tau, and sigma) play key roles in biological processes by binding and altering subcellular localization or stability of signaling molecules.
14-3-3 sigma was first identified as a mammary epithelium marker and later recognized as a regulator of the cell cycle checkpoint. It may serve as a prognostic marker for pancreatic cancer treatment outcomes.
This isoform is uniquely induced by p53 in response to DNA damage and functions as a p53-regulated inhibitor of G2/M progression, acting as a tumor suppressor gene often inactivated by methylation in epithelial tumor cells.
Two human 14-3-3 sigma isoforms are produced by alternative splicing.
