Target Information
The complement pathway is a crucial host defense system contributing to both innate and acquired immunity. There are three activation pathways: classical, lectin, and alternative. Complement protein Factor I is a key serine protease regulating the complement cascade by controlling C3 convertase levels. It circulates in plasma as a heavily N-glycosylated heterodimer composed of two disulfide-linked chains, each with three N-linked oligosaccharide chains that play structural and functional roles during catalysis. Factor I specifically cleaves C3b and C4b, requiring cofactors such as Factor H, CR1, or MCP for C3b cleavage, and C4bp or CR1 for C4b cleavage.
