Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with an estimated 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where this ratio is reversed. Another difference is that mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. Among species, the mitoribosomal proteins vary greatly in sequence and biochemical properties, making recognition by sequence homology difficult. This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, with alternatively spliced variants producing different isoforms.
