Target Information
Cytokeratin 19 is part of a subfamily of intermediate filament proteins characterized by biochemical diversity, represented in human epithelial tissues by at least 20 different polypeptides. Cytokeratins range in molecular weight from 40–68 kDa and have isoelectric points between 4.9–7.8.
Human cytokeratins are numbered 1 to 20, and their expression patterns vary depending on epithelial type and differentiation stage. These subtype expression patterns are valuable for distinguishing epithelial malignancies.
Cytokeratin antibodies assist in tumor differential diagnosis through immunohistochemistry and are also useful in cytopathology and flow cytometry.
Cytokeratin 19, notably, is not expressed in hepatocytes, making it useful for identifying liver metastases.
