Target Information
Escherichia coli (E. coli) are Gram-negative enteric bacteria residing in the human gut. Their presence in nature indicates human fecal contamination. Certain strains cause diseases such as urinary tract infections and neonatal meningitis. Enterotoxigenic strains can lead to severe intestinal diseases.
E. coli serotyping is based on three antigens:
- O antigen (somatic, cell surface lipopolysaccharide terminal sugars)
- K antigen (capsular)
- H antigen (flagellar)
