Target Information
This gene encodes a polypeptide hormone precursor that undergoes extensive, tissue-specific, post-translational processing by prohormone convertases. There are eight potential cleavage sites, and processing may yield up to ten biologically active peptides involved in diverse cellular functions.
The encoded protein is mainly synthesized in corticotroph cells of the anterior pituitary, producing adrenocorticotrophin and beta-lipotropin as major end products. In other tissues such as hypothalamus, placenta, and epithelium, additional peptides involved in pain and energy homeostasis, melanocyte stimulation, and immune modulation can be generated.
Mutations in this gene are associated with early-onset obesity, adrenal insufficiency, and red hair pigmentation. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding the same protein have been described.
