Target Information
Matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) family proteins are involved in the breakdown of extracellular matrix during normal physiological processes such as embryonic development, reproduction, and tissue remodeling, as well as in disease processes like arthritis and metastasis.
Most MMPs are secreted as inactive proproteins and activated upon cleavage by extracellular proteinases.
MMP-26 degrades type IV collagen, fibronectin, fibrinogen, casein, vitronectin, alpha 1-antitrypsin, alpha 2-macroglobulin, and IGFBP1, and activates MMP9.
Unlike most MMPs, it lacks a conserved C-terminal protein domain.
