Target Information

Glutathione plays a crucial role in protecting cells from oxidative damage by free radicals, detoxifying xenobiotics, and facilitating membrane transport. The GSS protein functions as a homodimer to catalyze the second step of glutathione biosynthesis—an ATP-dependent conversion of gamma-L-glutamyl-L-cysteine to glutathione. Mutations in this gene can cause glutathione synthetase deficiency.
