Target Information
Prostein is a prostate-specific protein expressed in both normal and malignant prostate tissues. It is a type IIIa plasma membrane protein with a cleavable signal peptide and 11 transmembrane-spanning regions.
Prostein expression is androgen responsive; treatment of LNCaP cells with androgen up-regulates prostein mRNA and protein expression.
Thus, Prostein serves as a prostate-specific marker useful for diagnosing and monitoring prostate cancer.
