Target Information

The SESN1 gene encodes a member of the sestrin family, which is induced by the p53 tumor suppressor protein and plays a role in the cellular response to DNA damage and oxidative stress. This protein mediates p53 inhibition of cell growth by activating AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), leading to inhibition of the mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR). It also contributes to antioxidant defense by regenerating overoxidized peroxiredoxins. Expression of this gene may serve as a marker for radiation exposure. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding multiple isoforms have been observed.
