Target Information
Interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β) is a proinflammatory cytokine produced by monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. It is synthesized as a 31 kDa inactive pro-form that accumulates in the cytosol and is cleaved into an active 17 kDa protein upon inflammasome activation. This activation leads to caspase-1 processing, which in turn cleaves pro-IL-1β.
IL-1β lacks a classical secretion signal and is released via a non-classical pathway. It signals through IL-1RI and IL-1RII, shared with IL-1α, and its activity is regulated by IL-1 Receptor Antagonist (IL-1RA). IL-1β plays a critical role in innate immune defense by inducing proinflammatory cytokine production and acute-phase responses. Elevated IL-1β levels are associated with chronic inflammatory diseases, and IL-1β neutralizing antibodies have potential therapeutic applications.
