Target Information
DNA deaminase (cytidine deaminase) that inhibits retrovirus replication and retrotransposon mobility via deaminase-dependent and independent mechanisms. The A3H-var/haplotype 2 shows antiviral activity against vif-deficient HIV-1. After retroviral nucleocapsid penetration and reverse transcription initiation, it converts cytosine to uracil in minus-sense single-stranded viral DNA, causing G-to-A hypermutations in plus-strand viral DNA. These mutations, along with deamination-independent mechanisms before proviral integration, provide strong antiretroviral effects. It selectively targets single-stranded DNA and does not act on double-stranded DNA or RNA. It also exhibits antiviral activity against HTLV-1 and may inhibit LTR and non-LTR retrotransposon mobility.
