Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and assist in mitochondrial protein synthesis. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with an estimated 75% protein to rRNA ratio, which contrasts with prokaryotic ribosomes. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA. The proteins comprising mitoribosomes vary significantly among species, making sequence homology recognition difficult.
This gene encodes a 39S subunit protein. It overlaps with the SEMA4G gene at 10q24.31 and is transcribed in the opposite direction. Multiple transcript variants encode at least four protein isoforms.
