Target Information
The CD4 antigen is involved in the recognition of MHC class II molecules and serves as a co-receptor for HIV. It is primarily expressed in T helper cells but can also be found in monocytes, macrophages, and dendritic cells. CD4 expression is detectable in thymus, lymph nodes, tonsils, spleen, and certain non-lymphoid tissues such as brain and gut. CD4 participates in early T-cell activation by associating with the T-cell receptor complex and protein tyrosine kinase Lck, and may also mediate neuronal damage in infectious and immune-mediated CNS diseases. Multiple alternatively spliced transcripts have been identified (RefSeq, July 2017).
