This gene product is a chymotryptic serine proteinase belonging to the peptidase family S1. It is expressed in mast cells and functions in extracellular matrix degradation, regulation of submucosal gland secretion, and generation of vasoactive peptides. In cardiovascular tissues, this protein primarily converts angiotensin I to angiotensin II, influencing blood pressure regulation and contributing to conditions such as hypertension, cardiac hypertrophy, and heart failure. The gene is located on chromosome 14q11.2 within a cluster of protease-encoding genes.
