The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the choline/ethanolamine kinase family, which catalyzes the first step of phosphatidylethanolamine (PtdEtn) biosynthesis via the cytidine diphosphate (CDP) ethanolamine pathway.
Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants.
