Target Information
The estrogen receptor (ER) is a 66 kDa protein that mediates the actions of estrogens in estrogen-responsive tissues. It belongs to the nuclear hormone receptor superfamily, functioning as a ligand-activated transcription factor. The ER gene spans over 140 kb of genomic DNA divided into 8 exons, encoding a protein with six functional domains (A–F). A second form, ER beta, has been identified. ER plays a key role in growth and differentiation of the mammary gland, and its presence in breast tumors indicates potential responsiveness to anti-estrogen therapies such as tamoxifen.
