Target Information
SPHK2, along with SPHK1, catalyzes the phosphorylation of sphingosine to produce sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P), a key signaling molecule.
S1P interacts with G-protein coupled receptors to regulate diverse cellular processes such as differentiation, calcium mobilization, and apoptosis.
SPHK2 plays roles in cell motility, survival, migration, and cell-cell interaction, and is implicated in cardiogenesis, vascular maturation, oocyte survival, immune cell trafficking, and neuronal and bone cell regulation.
S1P levels are controlled by Sphk1 and Sphk2 activity.
Inhibitors of SPHKs are being studied as potential cancer therapeutics.
