Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the phospholipase A2 (PLA2) family, a diverse group of enzymes varying in sequence, function, localization, and cation requirements. This gene product is a member of group II PLA2, a secreted extracellular enzyme with low molecular mass that requires calcium ions for catalysis. It hydrolyzes the sn-2 fatty acid acyl ester bond of phosphoglycerides, releasing free fatty acids and lysophospholipids, and is thought to regulate phospholipid metabolism in biomembranes. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants with distinct 5’ UTRs have been identified for this gene.
