Target Information
Glutamate receptors mediate most excitatory neurotransmission in the brain and play an important role in neural plasticity, development, and neurodegeneration. Ionotropic glutamate receptors are categorized into NMDA receptors and kainate/AMPA receptors, both containing glutamate-gated, cation-specific ion channels. Kainate/AMPA receptors, co-localized with NMDA receptors in many synapses, consist of seven subunits (GluR1–GluR7). They are primarily responsible for fast excitatory neurotransmission by glutamate, while NMDA receptors are characterized by slower kinetics and higher Ca²⁺ permeability.
