Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is the fifth component of complement, which plays an important role in inflammatory and cell killing processes. It is composed of alpha and beta polypeptide chains linked by a disulfide bridge. The activation peptide C5a, an anaphylatoxin with potent spasmogenic and chemotactic activity, is derived from the alpha chain via cleavage with a convertase. The C5b cleavage product forms a complex with complement component C6, serving as the basis for the membrane attack complex formation. Mutations in this gene cause complement component 5 deficiency, leading to recurrent infections. Defects are also associated with susceptibility to liver fibrosis and rheumatoid arthritis.
