Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and are involved in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with approximately 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes where the ratio is reversed. Mammalian mitoribosomes lack a 5S rRNA found in prokaryotic ribosomes. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome differ significantly among species, making homology-based recognition difficult. The MRPL33 gene encodes a 39S subunit protein, and alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been described.
