Target Information
The jellyfish Aequorea victoria contains green fluorescent protein (GFP Tag) that emits light in bioluminescence reactions. GFP is widely used as a reporter protein for gene expression in both eukaryotic and prokaryotic organisms, and as a protein tag in cell culture and multicellular systems. As a fusion tag, GFP enables visualization of protein localization, movement, and subcellular dynamics.
GFP is a 27 kDa monomeric protein that forms a fluorescent pigment autonomously. It absorbs blue light (395 nm) and emits green light (508 nm) without requiring additional cofactors. Its fluorescence is stable and species-independent, making it suitable for various research applications, including monitoring gene expression, studying protein localization, protein–protein interactions (yeast two-hybrid), and FRET experiments.
