Target Information
METRNL is a hormone induced following exercise or cold exposure that promotes energy expenditure. It is expressed in skeletal muscle after exercise or in adipose tissue following cold exposure and circulates in the bloodstream. METRNL stimulates energy expenditure associated with browning of white fat depots and improves glucose tolerance. It acts indirectly by activating immune cell subtypes that promote thermogenic and anti-inflammatory gene programs in adipose tissue. It is required for certain cold-induced thermogenic responses, indicating a role in metabolic adaptations to cold temperatures.
