The monoclonal antibody eBioP4D1 (P4D1) recognizes ubiquitin, a small 8 kDa protein. Ubiquitin units are linked to proteins through ubiquitination, signaling them for degradation by the 26S proteasome.
Ubiquitination is involved in differentiation, cell cycle progression, apoptosis, and disease progression. For instance, neuronal inclusions (Lewy bodies) found in Parkinson’s disease patients are rich in ubiquitin.

Target Information
Ubiquitin is a highly conserved protein essential for targeting cellular proteins for degradation via the 26S proteasome. It is synthesized as a precursor protein consisting of either polyubiquitin chains or a single ubiquitin fused to another protein.
The gene encodes a fusion protein with ubiquitin at the N-terminus and ribosomal protein S27a at the C-terminus. Upon expression, it is processed into free ubiquitin monomers and ribosomal protein S27a, a component of the 40S ribosomal subunit with C4-type zinc finger domains located in the cytoplasm.
Pseudogenes derived from this gene exist in the genome. Similarly, ribosomal proteins L40 and S30 are synthesized as fusion proteins with ubiquitin or ubiquitin-like proteins.
