C4는 보체의 고전 경로(classical complement pathway)의 구성 요소로, 활성화된 C1s에 의해 C4a와 C4b로 절단됩니다. C2a와 C4b는 함께 classical C3 convertase를 형성합니다. C4의 분자량은 약 204 kDa이며, α(97 kDa), β(75 kDa), γ(33 kDa)의 세 개의 서브유닛으로 구성되어 있습니다.
