Target Information
Apoptosis Inducing Factor (AIF) causes chromatin condensation and DNA fragmentation. AIF was recently identified and cloned. Apoptosis is characterized by morphological nuclear changes such as chromatin condensation and fragmentation, triggered by activation of caspase family members, caspase-activated DNase, and other proteins.
Like cytochrome c and caspase-9, AIF localizes in mitochondria and translocates to the nucleus upon apoptosis induction. It induces chromatin condensation and large-scale DNA fragmentation—hallmarks of apoptosis—in both isolated and live cell nuclei.
AIF is highly conserved between human and mouse and widely expressed. Mutations in the AIF gene cause combined oxidative phosphorylation deficiency 6, leading to severe mitochondrial encephalomyopathy. Alternative splicing produces multiple transcript variants, and a related pseudogene exists on chromosome 10.
