Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is an important cause of acute and chronic liver disease and is the most common form of parenterally transmitted viral hepatitis. Approximately 350 million people are affected worldwide. Immunization against hepatitis B is a key component of preventative medicine and is offered to all children in many countries.
HBV belongs to the Hepadnaviridae family, and infection can lead to persistent viral carriage and development of hepatocellular carcinoma. There are currently about 400 million HBV carriers globally, making HBV one of the most common human pathogens.
