Target Information
The V region of the variable domain of immunoglobulin light chains participates in antigen recognition (PubMed:24600447).
Immunoglobulins (antibodies) are membrane-bound or secreted glycoproteins produced by B lymphocytes.
In the recognition phase of humoral immunity, membrane-bound immunoglobulins act as receptors that, upon binding specific antigens, trigger clonal expansion and differentiation into plasma cells secreting immunoglobulins.
Secreted immunoglobulins mediate the effector phase of humoral immunity, leading to antigen elimination (PubMed:20176268, PubMed:22158414).
Each immunoglobulin has two antigen-binding sites formed by the variable domains of heavy and light chains.
These domains are assembled through V-(D)-J rearrangement and can undergo somatic hypermutation to enhance affinity after antigen exposure and selection (PubMed:20176268, PubMed:17576170).
