Olfactory receptors interact with odorant molecules in the nose to initiate neuronal responses that trigger the perception of smell. These receptor proteins belong to a large family of G-protein-coupled receptors (GPCR) derived from single coding-exon genes. They share a seven-transmembrane domain structure common to many neurotransmitter and hormone receptors and are responsible for odorant recognition and G protein-mediated signal transduction. The olfactory receptor gene family is the largest in the genome, and nomenclature for olfactory receptor genes and proteins is organism-specific.
