Target Information
Ki-67 is a nuclear protein expressed during various stages of the cell cycle, particularly in late G1, S, G2, and M phases. It contains a forkhead-associated (FHA) domain that associates with euchromatin at the perichromosomal layer, centromeric heterochromatin, and nucleolus.
Ki-67 shows cell cycle–dependent localization: perinucleolar in G1, nuclear matrix in G2, and chromosomal during M phase.
As a proliferation marker, Ki-67 is absent in G0 cells and increases steadily from G1 through mitosis. Ki-67 antibodies are useful for determining the growth fraction in neoplasms, showing strong correlation between low Ki-67 index and low-grade tumors. It is routinely used as a neuronal marker for cell cycling and proliferation.
