Target Information
Chromosome 9 consists of approximately 145 million bases, representing about 4% of the human genome, and encodes nearly 900 genes. It is considered to play a role in gender determination, and deletion of the distal portion of 9p can result in male-to-female sex reversal in individuals with an XY genotype.
Chromosome 9 is associated with several genetic conditions, including hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (linked to the ENG gene) and familial dysautonomia (linked to the IKBKAP gene). It also contains the largest interferon family gene cluster.
A translocation between chromosomes 9 and 22 leads to production of the BCR-ABL fusion protein commonly found in leukemias. The C9orf84 gene product has been provisionally designated C9orf84 and exists in two isoforms produced through alternative splicing.
