Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporter superfamily. ABC proteins transport various molecules across cellular membranes and are divided into seven subfamilies (ABC1, MDR/TAP, MRP, ALD, OABP, GCN20, White).
ABCC5 belongs to the MRP subfamily involved in multidrug resistance and mediates cellular export of cyclic nucleotides, contributing to their degradation and elimination.
This protein confers resistance to thiopurine anticancer drugs (6-mercaptopurine, thioguanine) and the anti-HIV drug 9-(2-phosphonylmethoxyethyl)adenine. It may play a role in drug resistance in acute lymphoblastic leukemia and HIV-infected patients.
Alternative splicing has been observed, though the complete sequence and translation initiation site are unclear.
