Target Information
The genus Salmonella is a member of the family Enterobacteriaceae. It consists of Gram-negative, facultative, motile bacilli.
Salmonellae possess three major surface antigens:
- H antigen (flagellar): phase 1 and 2
- O antigen (somatic): part of the LPS moiety
- Vi antigen (capsular): referred to as K in other Enterobacteriaceae
They also possess the LPS endotoxin typical of Gram-negative bacteria, composed of:
- O polysaccharide (O antigen)
- R core
- Lipid A (endotoxic inner component)
Endotoxins can induce fever and activate complement, kinin, and clotting factors.
