Target Information

Adducins are heteromeric proteins composed of alpha, beta, and gamma subunits. These subunits are encoded by distinct genes and form part of the membrane skeletal proteins involved in the assembly of the spectrin-actin network in erythrocytes and epithelial cell junctions.

• Alpha and gamma adducins are ubiquitously expressed, while beta adducin is mainly found in brain and hematopoietic tissues.
• Adducin was first purified from human erythrocytes as an alpha-beta heterodimer.
• Polymorphisms in these subunits have been linked to blood pressure regulation in animal models of hypertension.
• Each subunit has two domains: a protease-resistant globular N-terminal domain and a protease-sensitive C-terminal domain containing phosphorylation sites for protein kinase C, a calmodulin-binding site, and sites required for spectrin and actin association.
• Multiple alternatively spliced beta adducin mRNAs encoding different isoforms have been described, though not all functions are fully understood.
