Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is a 3'-exoribonuclease, similar to the RNase D family of 3'-exonucleases. It preferentially degrades poly(A) tails of mRNAs, initiating mRNA decay in eukaryotic cells. This protein also participates in silencing certain maternal mRNAs during oocyte maturation and early embryonic development, and in nonsense-mediated decay (NMD) of mRNAs with premature stop codons. Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
