This gene encodes a chromatin-associated enzyme, poly(ADP-ribosyl)transferase, which modifies various nuclear proteins by poly(ADP-ribosyl)ation. The modification is DNA-dependent and is involved in regulating key cellular processes such as differentiation, proliferation, tumor transformation, and DNA damage recovery. Mutations in this gene may be associated with Fanconi anemia and type I diabetes pathophysiology.
