Target Information
FTO is a novel protein and a member of the non-heme dioxygenase (Fe(II)- and 2-oxoglutarate-dependent dioxygenases) superfamily. Amino acid conservation patterns indicate that both 2-oxoglutarate and iron are important for FTO function. Although the function of FTO is not fully understood, it is believed to influence the activity of genes involved in metabolism and fat storage, potentially affecting susceptibility to obesity.
