Target Information
Thyroid Peroxidase (TPO) is a membrane-bound glycoprotein enzyme essential for thyroid gland function. It catalyzes the iodination of tyrosine residues in thyroglobulin and the coupling of iodotyrosines to produce thyroid hormones such as thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3).
Mutations in the TPO gene can lead to disorders such as congenital hypothyroidism, congenital goiter, and thyroid hormone organification defect IIA.
Several transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been identified, although the full-length nature of some remains undetermined.
Diseases associated with TPO include Thyroid Dyshormonogenesis 2A and Congenital Hypothyroidism.
