Target Information
Arg3.1 (ARC) is a master regulator of synaptic plasticity that self-assembles into virion-like capsids encapsulating RNAs for intercellular RNA transfer in the nervous system. ARC protein is released from neurons via extracellular vesicles, mediating ARC mRNA transfer and activity-dependent translation in target cells.
It is essential for long-term potentiation (LTP), long-term depression (LTD), and long-term memory formation. ARC regulates synaptic plasticity by promoting endocytosis of AMPA receptors (AMPARs) in response to synaptic activity, contributing to neuronal homeostasis through synaptic scaling.
Additionally, ARC acts as a postsynaptic mediator for synapse elimination during cerebellar development and plays a role in amyloid-beta A4 (APP) processing via interaction with PSEN1. Beyond synaptic functions, ARC is expressed in skin-migratory dendritic cells, regulating fast dendritic cell migration and T-cell activation.
