Target Information
Pepsin is a single polypeptide chain derived from its precursor, pepsinogen, by removal of a 41 amino acid segment from the N-terminus. Pepsinogen is synthesized in the stomach lining, and hydrochloric acid is required to convert it into the active enzyme and maintain the acidic environment (pH 1–3) for optimal activity.
Pepsin preferentially cleaves peptide bonds involving aromatic amino acids such as phenylalanine and leucine, but can act on a broad range of substrates.
Pepsin A, a member of the subfamily A1 within the pepsin family, is the predominant endopeptidase in the gastric juice of vertebrates and is inhibited by ovUS-1, a uterine serpin.
