Target Information
Influenza A virus is a major public health threat, responsible for over 30,000 deaths per year in the USA.
In early 2009, a novel swine-origin influenza A (H1N1) virus emerged in Mexico and the United States, spreading globally and leading to a pandemic declared by the WHO on June 11, 2009.
The Influenza A virus expresses one of sixteen Hemagglutinin (HA) and one of nine Neuraminidase (NA) surface proteins.
HA mediates viral attachment, while NA facilitates viral release. Both proteins elicit immune responses that can prevent infection or reduce viral replication.
The 2009 H1N1 strain combines genetic material from human, swine, and avian influenza viruses, along with two Eurasian swine H3N2 genes.
Due to its distinct antigenic properties, human immunity to this new strain was limited, though some protection was observed in older populations.
