Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, both in keratinizing tissue (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). At least 20 different CKs can be identified. Most CK family members fall into two classes: type I (acidic polypeptides) and type II (basic polypeptides).
Keratin 14, belonging to the type I subfamily of low molecular weight keratins, pairs with keratin 5 and distinguishes stratified epithelial cells from simple epithelial cells. It is useful in identifying squamous cell carcinomas and is considered a prognostic marker in breast carcinomas. At least one member of the acidic and one of the basic CK families are expressed in all epithelial cells.
