CDK1 (Cell Division Control protein 1) is essential for the completion of START, the controlling event in the cell cycle required to initiate mitosis. CDK1 acts as the catalytic subunit of the M-Phase Promoting Factor complex, which induces entry into mitosis and is conserved among eukaryotes. CDK1-mediated phosphorylation events are implicated in apoptosis regulation and cancer progression, including androgen-independent prostate cancer.
