Target Information

BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor) is a member of the neurotrophin family. It is synthesized as pre-proBDNF, then cleaved to proBDNF. Further processing generates the mature 14 kDa protein, but proBDNF itself is biologically active and secreted in synaptic vesicles alongside the mature form.

BDNF is widely expressed in the central nervous system and acts in both autocrine and paracrine manners on various neuron classes. Signaling primarily occurs through the TrkB receptor, though binding to the lower-affinity receptor p75-NTR has also been observed. BDNF promotes neuronal survival, differentiation, memory formation, and synaptic regulation. Its expression is reduced in Alzheimer’s and Huntington’s disease patients and may be involved in stress response and mood disorder regulation.
