Target Information
Glutamic acid rich protein (GARP) is a soluble protein localized to the outer segments of the rod photoreceptor. GARPs are characterized by six repeated motifs of VVEKKN/EE, which help form an alpha-helix structure. The function of GARP is not fully characterized, but studies suggest it may limit cGMP turnover by inhibiting phosphodiesterase activity. Two splice variants are known: GARP1 (full-length) and GARP2 (truncated). GARP also interacts with the cytoplasmic domain of the beta-subunit of the cyclic GMP-gated channel in the plasma membrane.
